Performance Anxiety & Public Speaking

When Pressure Changes How You Feel

Performance anxiety can affect you in ways that people around you may never fully realise.

You may appear capable, confident and experienced externally while internally feeling intense pressure, self-doubt or anxiety whenever attention is placed on you.

For some people this happens during presentations, meetings or public speaking. For others, it shows up more quietly through driving anxiety, fear of being judged, social pressure or situations where they feel expected to perform, speak or stay in control.

You may find yourself overthinking situations beforehand, anticipating things going wrong or becoming highly aware of yourself the moment attention shifts onto you.

Even when you logically know you are capable, your mind and body can still react as though something unsafe is happening.

This can become frustrating and emotionally exhausting, especially when part of you knows you should feel more confident than you do.

Feeling Consumed by Pressure

Over time, performance anxiety can begin affecting much more than the situation itself.

Many people start carrying anxiety long before events happen, mentally preparing for worst-case scenarios, doubting themselves or feeling trapped in cycles of anticipation and pressure.

Eventually, the fear of the feeling itself can become just as overwhelming as the actual situation.

You may avoid opportunities, hold yourself back or feel frustrated that anxiety seems to take over in moments where you want to feel calm, capable and present.
